This is not another niche specialty rig; it is a direct challenge to the idea that Hollywood-style slow motion belongs mostly in post-production. ARRI has released the Alexa 35 Live Xtreme as a new version of its Alexa 35 for live productions, delivering up to 8x high-frame-rate video in HD over SDI. In other words, live broadcast slow motion is no longer a bolt-on extra. It is baked into the camera head that shaders, engineers, and directors already expect to see on their multicam systems.

High Frame Rates Without Abandoning SDI

The headline feature is straightforward: the ARRI Alexa 35 Live Xtreme pushes high frame rate output of up to 8x into live productions over traditional SDI, no separate high-speed camera required. Combined with the LPS-1 Fiber Camera Adapter, Fiber Base Station, and a standard slow-motion playout server such as SimplyLive or EVS, the camera outputs HFR at up to 8x in HD or 2x in UHD. According to ARRI, “In HD, the Alexa 35 Live Xtreme offers up to 8x HFR. In UHD, it’s limited to 2x.” Up to 4x HFR travels over a single SDI connector, and higher speeds are split across both SDI outputs, which keeps the whole pipeline within SMPTE-style baseband conventions instead of forcing an IP transport overhaul. For broadcasters wary of ripping out SDI, this is the real breakthrough: Hollywood-grade slow motion without a forklift upgrade.

Cinematic Slow Motion, One Sensor, Two Feeds

Under the hood, the Alexa 35 Live Xtreme brings the same sensor behavior known from its cine sibling. Frame rates up to 330fps use the camera’s full dynamic range of 17 stops, while a Sensor Overdrive mode enables frame rates up to 480fps at a reduced dynamic range of 11 stops. That means directors can choose between maximum latitude or maximum slow-down factor. Whichever frame rate is chosen for the slow-motion feed, the system simultaneously outputs a live feed for broadcast, allowing operators to switch between the program frame rate and HFR in real time. The camera also shoots regular-speed video or HFR from the same body, which gives live productions far more flexibility in how they plan and shoot. Add the phase-blending feature for motion blur control, and the result is a SDI broadcast camera that treats cinematic slow motion as a first-class live signal, not an afterthought.

Why Live Broadcast Slow Motion Matters Now

This launch is not happening in a vacuum. The Alexa 35 Live Multicam System entered the scene in 2024 and has already proven itself in large-scale deployments such as major song contests, where ARRI’s live production system has been battle-tested. The Alexa 35 Live Xtreme is the logical next step: the company’s first major broadcast camera release since Thomas Riedel acquired it, landing exactly in the live-production territory where Riedel’s infrastructure business already dominates. When Thomas Riedel bought ARRI back in April, the company said it wanted to expand its share of the live production market; the Alexa 35 Live Xtreme makes that intent clearer. Sports, live concerts, fashion shows, and major televised events are obvious winners, where slow-motion replays carry emotion and detail that standard-frame-rate feeds simply cannot show.

The New Baseline for SDI Broadcast Cameras

The deeper shift is strategic: one camera position can now serve both the live cut and super-slow-motion replays, feeding them into the standard baseband workflow while maintaining a consistent ARRI look across every angle. Super-slow-motion replays are available instantly, with no need to cue up recorded material for playback, which shortens the creative distance between a moment on the field or stage and its cinematic retelling. For productions already invested in the Alexa 35 Live, there is a defined path forward: Alexa 35 Live cameras sold from 2026 onwards can be upgraded to Xtreme functionality by purchasing the High Speed and HFR SDI Licenses from ARRI’s online shop, while pre-2026 units can be updated with a service-center hardware upgrade. The Alexa 35 Live Xtreme joins the existing Alexa 35 Live rather than replacing it, signaling that high frame rate video is about to become a baseline expectation for SDI broadcast cameras, not a rare luxury.
